The organization of this first legislative body was subordinated to a single interest -- the location of the capital at Yankton. By previous arrangement, powerful positions were assigned to certain individuals in return for their support for Yankton.

In 1859 the question of securing a political organization for the Territory of Dakota was uppermost on the minds of the settlers in the region. They realized that there would be little incentive for the establishment of business and homes until the settlers were secure in some form of government that would protect them.

County commissioners hold special meeting

A special meeting of the Gregory County Board of Commissioners was held at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, August 19, 2021, at the Gregory County Courthouse. The board went into executive session shortly after the meeting began to discuss personnel.

South Dakota is a rising star as a recovery leader

It may not surprise many here at home, but South Dakota is leading the nation in recovery. Moody’s Analytics and CNN track how far along the nation’s economy is at getting “Back to Normal,” and they say that the US is only 92 percent recovered. But South Dakota is the top-ranked state in this metric at 113 percent, meaning we’ve more than recovered and are growing substantially. Secondplace Idaho is far behind us at just 103 percent. Obviously, CNN is no friend to me or my policies, but even they can admit that South Dakota’s economy is thriving.

Fivemile Creek is located on the west side of the river just above the Lyman County line directly across from Bijou Hills. This prominent landmark served countless river travelers as a reference point as they traveled up and down the Missouri River.

South Dakota COVID numbers are on the rise

After hitting a low of only 148 active cases of COVID-19 in South Dakota on June 30, the number of cases has been steadily climbing. On Monday, August 16, the South Dakota Department of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard showed 1355 active cases in the state.

Thank you, Gregory! I arrived in town August of 1984, age 21, still a little “wet behind the ears.” I was set to begin my first “big boy” job after graduating from college. My duties were to teach Junior High Mathematics and coach JH Girls Basketball and Assistant Coach HS Boys Basketball.
