Opinion

Governor Kristi Noem

Over the past several years, South Dakota’s economy has consistently been the strongest of any state in the country. We recently received two updates that underscore just how strong our economy continues to be, even with the sluggish economy under the Biden-Harris Administration.

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

Whetstone A g e n c y , although some distance from any significant white settlement, was not exempt from the harmful influence of the unscrupulous ranchman, who followed in the wake of our most advanced military posts, and hovered around secluded Indian agencies. They located as near the boundary line as possible, often only a few feet outside the jurisdiction of the agency.

Rooster!

There’s a call that you’ll hear across much of South Dakota over the next several months. It doesn’t sound like a bird, though it’s all about one. The shout of “ROOSTER!” will ring out in fields and ditches, just like it does every fall into the early winter.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear editor, The 2025 election is right around the corner and early voting is open for South Dakota residents. If you’re like me, you are dreading all the mailers and advertisements that are heading our way, along with the new electronic advertising that will be on your cell phones. But if you’ll give me just a couple moments of your time I’d like to talk about the District 21 Senate race and why I think it’s important that we elect Mykala Voita to this office. I’ve gotten to know Mykala over the past few months and listened to her views on many subjects that pertain to this state, District 21, and its constituents. It would be a great pleasure to work with her in Pierre. Her principles and beliefs on what life should be in South Dakota are refreshing, so I’m asking you to vote for Mykala Voita on November 5. Thank you Marty Overweg Dear Editor, The Dangerous Make-Believe Maga World Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters confer religious hero status upon Donald Trump, as is represented in the MAGA flag that includes the words Trump, God, and Guns on the American flag. The depiction of Trump as righteous, however, defies reality. Widely and clearly broadcasted for years, Trump’s behavior in fact contradicts basic Christian as well as core traditional South Dakota values.

Buffer Strip Property Tax Incentive deadline is approaching

The South Dakota Department of Revenue reminds landowners that applications for the riparian buffer strip property tax incentive must be submitted by October 15, 2024. Eligible riparian buffer strips can receive a reduction in the assessed value for property tax purposes.

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

In 1869 there were no school houses or churches at Whetstone, neither teachers nor ministers. Poole’s predecessor did ask him to receipt for a school house when receiving the Government property on his arrival. Upon inspection, Poole found that it existed only in an individual’s imagination.

Cyber place

South Dakota is a growing state, but we aren’t just growing in our more traditional industries like agriculture, tourism, and financial services. In recent years, South Dakota’s cybersecurity industry has taken off !

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

In 1870, Gen. D. S. Stanley was in command of the military district of Dakota, with headquarters at Fort Sully. The U. S. Infantry was stationed at the different forts in the territory and at the Indian agencies which included the Whetstone Agency. From all available accounts, relations were unusually quiet and peaceable.

Dear editor, Vote NO on Referred Law 21: A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing Recently supporters of a controversial proposed hazardous carbon dioxide pipeline have been promoting Referred Law 21. However, before you vote on RL 21 this November, you need to understand the rest of the story.

Round ‘em up

“There’s nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse.” That quote hung on a gate on our family farm and ranch growing up. It wasn’t until years later that I realized who said those words: the Gipper himself, President Ronald Reagan.
