SD schools get heat stress trackers

Members of the board of directors of the South Dakota High School Activities Association served as delivery drivers Thursday, taking new instruments back to their schools that will help student-athletes stay safe when practicing in hot conditions outdoors.

Hope has power - it drives us to achieve incredible things that we never thought possible or endure difficulties that previous seemed insurmountable. Unfortunately, for the same reasons, hopelessness can hold tremendous power over a person’s life, too. Too often, that loss of hope leads to suicide - a suicide that is entirely preventable. Suicide is a growing public health issue in our country and in South Dakota, and it affects each of our lives in some way.

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

One of the first reports of a general roundup of cattle in South Dakota appeared in the May 7, 1880 edition of the Omaha Daily Bee. The paper reported that “The general roundup of stock of northern Nebraska, a portion of Wyoming, and Forsythe and Custer counties in Dakota Territory will commence May 20.”

Dear Editor, Recently, the proposed Gregory County Pumped Storage Project has been a topic of discussion in the community and surrounding areas. For quite a period of time, like many others in the area, we were quite strongly opposed to the proposed project.

Fifty years of Title IX

Nostalgia can be bittersweet. Sometimes I miss playing high school basketball – working with teammates, hearing the crowd, feeling the pride of seeing hustle pay off. I loved watching my kids play sports, and I also loved watching Bryon coach, but there’s nothing quite like the thrill of competing yourself - of taking on the opponent and emerging victorious.

When Dakota Territory was organized in 1861, the typical oneroom school throughout the United States had as its basic curriculum the “three Rs” -- “reading, writing, and arithmetic.” Other subjects were added as settlers moved westward from the Atlantic coast.

Canadian Perspective

Dear Editor, My complaint is about people who drive through city alleys and turn their dogs out, letting them run on other people’s properties and eat pet food that’s out for their own pets. Either fence them in or leash them.
