LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor, With Election Day fast approaching, I wanted to take this opportunity to share some important information about our election processes in South Dakota. The primary election will be held on Tuesday, June 7.

Their sacrifice is a call for us to serve

If you ever visit South Dakota’s State Capitol, I hope you take the time to visit the veterans’ memorial down by Capitol Lake. While this memorial is dedicated to all veterans who have served, there is a portion specifically dedicated to the more than 300 South Dakotans killed in the Korean and Vietnam wars. On one side there is an inscription: May we ever protect the freedoms for which they fought.

Countless incidents were described in detail, and she heard many stories which revealed the values, culture, attitude, and life of those cowboys who were being interviewed.

South Dakota is a 2nd Amendment sanctuary

Over the past two years, America has seen some of the most concerning attacks on freedom in our history. Governments seized previously unimagined power over our day-to-day lives. Churches were forced to close, forsaking freedom of religion. Big Tech and government alike attempted to police speech, something that is supposed to be free for all. And though the Supreme Court seems poised to advance the right to life of all people,

Jane Kramer, one of the most admired writers for The New Yorker Magazine convinced her editor in 1977 that she wanted to write a special story on the “last cowboy”. At the time, she lived in New York with her husband and daughter and had traveled to Europe many times for her stories.

Canadian Perspective

Please join in a critical look at the razzle-dazzle of the news about the crises facing us all. We are now learning to live with COVID so we can get on with our lives. The US has passed 1 million deaths from the virus. Those of us who are vaccinated aren’t afraid of using masks and taking precautions so we don’t have to worry. Not wearing a mask became such a symbol of defying big government regulation, and vaccination became so political in this country, I wonder what would have happened if the vaccine had been called the Trump vaccine. There are so many side effects from the pandemic and its effect on people’s lives that total recovery will take a long time. But vaccine research had given us new vaccines for the rest of the world. The shutdown in China illustrates the problem of a dictatorial government which does not have an effective vaccine, and President Xi Jinping must keep control of the virus to get his dictatorship renewed. When their economy is shut down, it affects availability and prices of things here.

GOVERNOR KRISTI NOEM

Nature has a way of humbling us, of stepping into our lives with previously unthought power and reminding us what truly matters. That's how I felt these past two days while surveying storm damage across much of South Dakota.

The early fur trapper or mountain man was an individual in tune with the world he inhabited. Most of the time alone in the wilderness, he was his own cook, surgeon, soldier, wrangler, guide, seamstress, veterinarian, and gunsmith.
