Achievement days held last weekend in Burke

Gregory County 4-H held the 2024 Achievement Days at the Burke Rodeo Arena and the Burke Civic Center from Sunday, August 4 - Tuesday, August 6, 2024. Display exhibits were judged on Sunday and available for viewing throughout the duration of Achievement Days. Monday August 5, 2024, kicked off with companion animals (featuring guinea pigs), rabbits, and the poultry show. With over 60 entries in the poultry area, we had an excellent showcase of various breeds. BankWest sponsored and served watermelon before moving into our afternoon shows of meat goats and dairy goats. The evening concluded with the Burke Community Club sponsoring and serving the community meal including pancakes and sausage, cooked by the Burke Fire Department.

Referred pipeline law puts company’s permit quest in limbo

An Iowa company seeking regulatory approval to run a carbon dioxide pipeline through South Dakota and four other states said a delay in its plan to re-apply for a permit has nothing to do with a November vote on the project.

City Council still mulling over ownership of Dixon Town Hall

At the regular meeting of the Gregory City Council on Monday, August 5, 2024, the topic of woning Dixon Town Hall was discussed. Jerry and Bette Fogel are still looking for someone to take ownership of the facility. Mayor Cerny put out the idea of the city owning the building and having either the Chamber, Gregory Economic Development Group, or the newly-formed arts council manage it.

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) reminds the public to remain vigilant when recreating on lakes around the state as harmful algal blooms (HAB) can develop rapidly and without notice during the warm summer months.

South Dakota Board of Regents launches new gateway to teacher education certificate

The South Dakota Board of Regents (BOR) recently announced the launch of the Gateway to Teacher Education undergraduate certificate, a new initiative aimed at providing students across South Dakota with a head start in pursuing a career in K-12 teacher education. This program introduces students to the rewarding teaching field while equipping them with essential courses to better prepare them for future goals. This certificate is uniquely positioned to be delivered on campus, online, and through South Dakota’s High School Dual Credit program.

Street resurfacing continues

Local drivers are already celebrating some smoother streets around town as work continues on 42 blocks slated for resurfacing. Just the first step of applying gravel was a huge improvement, but now the milling and packing have begun.

The Lindsey Family to perform at Prairie View Gospel Barn

The Lindsey Family will make their first appearance at Prairie View Gospel Barn on Tuesday, August 6. Traveling and playing music throughout the United States and Canada, The Lindsey Family sings and plays positive-oriented music, mostly in the acoustic tradition, with other instruments and styles as appropriate.
