The Class of 2026’s top 1 percent of graduating high school seniors were recognized recently at the 36th Annual Academic Excellence Recognition luncheon. Governor Larry Rhoden’s office and the Associated School Boards of South Dakota (ASBSD) honored students identified as the top one percent of their senior class, from the state’s Public, Private, and Tribal/ BIE schools on Monday, April 27.

A larger than normal audience gathered for the regular meeting of the Gregory School District Board of Education’s regular meeting at noon on Monday, May 11. During public input a couple people expressed their support for the school administration and appreciation for members of the school board for being involved when so few are willing to do so, especially when faced with criticism for the work they do. Other sentiments expressed the dedication of the staff, the quality learning experience, and highly regarded reputation of the school. These comments were likely in response to a rumor that had been circulating about a petition to fire the superintendent and principal.

Jason Nebola has added a new business to complement his constuction company. Cracks R Whack is a spray foam business that uses a closed cell spray foam for insulating. Superior to open cell foam because it is a water barrier, it also adds structural strength to a building. Three inches of the product will achieve an R value of 21, higher than the national code of R19.

The Gregory High School class of 2026 has chosen Mrs. Ronda Graber as the keynote for their commencement, to be held Saturday, May 16.

The Gregory High School boys track records took another hit this past week as Pierce Stukel set his sights on the 96-year-old record in the 200 meters and shaved off .14 seconds from Leo Lubbers’ 1932 time at the Platte-Geddes Relays on Saturday, May 9, with a new record of 22.6.

Congratulations to all area graduates as you prepare to celebrate an academic ending and a new beginning. This season may feel both exciting and terrifying.

Southeast Technical College students and staff took part in a recordbreaking community service event as part of the Spring 2026 Service to Community (STC) Days. From wheelchair ramps to activity kits, volunteers constructed items to help dedicated staff at Camp Leif Erickson run memorable activities for campers this summer. The volunteer event was the largest single-day event in STC history with 383 volunteers contributing 496 community service hours.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) reminds the public that political campaign and ballot-issue signs cannot be placed on state highway rights of way. “This time of year, it is common to find election signs placed along the state’s roadways,” says Craig Smith, Director of Operations.

The pool fund is nearing the $800,000 mark, now reaching $742,419.33. Summer will be here before we know it, and the city’s public works department is hoping (fingers crossed) to have the old pools back in business in time for the hot weather. Meanwhile, fundraising continues for the new pool.
