Another 365 days have passed, and a lot happened in Gregory during that time. Here’s a look at some of the events.

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas! Soon, I will be headed back to the halls of the State Capitol to represent you in the upcoming 99th legislative session. In 40 legislative days, we will vote on hundreds of bills in committee and on the Senate and House floor. I am again entrusted by senate leadership to chair Health and Human Services. I will also again sit on the State Affairs and Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.

The bill to cut unemployment insurance employer contributions by 0.5%, HB 1011, goes into effect on January 1st, 2024. This bill delivers an $18 million tax cut for South Dakota businesses.

Applications for the Billie Sutton Leadership Institute’s 2024 Sutton Leaders and Rural POWER programs officially opened January 1, 2024. Marla Bull Bear at Lakota Youth Development in Herrick, SD has recently been selected to receive a $66,442 grant from the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (NCR-SARE) for the project, Ethnobotany Education Project.

Governor Kristi Noem launched the “Nurses, STAT!” ad as part of the Freedom Works Here nationwide workforce recruitment campaign. The ad features Governor Noem as a nurse to recruit more healthcare workers to South Dakota.

On Wednesday, December 27, Governor Kristi Noem and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) announced a $1 million investment in South Dakota Trade to help businesses grow their overseas sales and support high-quality jobs in South Dakota.
