Canadian Perspective

I am back, readers, from the smoke country caused by wildfires in the far north which became national news when the smoke hit New York City. But first, kudos to Todd County Tribune’s owners, the Scherers, in their makeover of that newspaper. Local newspapers are very valuable to our communities. Now to the continuing unpredictable weather weirding.... Meteorologists tell us that at this point in 2023, they are recording the Earth’s warmest average temperatures on record, and as I have pointed out before, the warming is four times faster in the polar regions.

Highway dept. working toward full staff

The regular meeting of the Gregory County Board of Commissioners was held at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 5, at the Gregory County Courthouse. Meyer gets a hand 4-H Assistant Ashley Meyer reported on the possibility of receiving help from SDSU 4-H staff for Achievement Days in return for lodging and meals at an estimated cost of $1,015.00.

Grants could help save some older homes around Gregory

The regular meeting of the Gregory City Council was held at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, July 6, at City Hall. The deviation from their normal Monday evening meeting was due to the July 4 government holiday on July 3.

Burke Riding Club to host play nights

The Burke Riding Club will host play nights again this summer starting Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. at the Burke Stampede arena. Due to the Fourth of July falling on a Tuesday, they have moved the first play night back. The remaining play nights will be on Tuesday nights.

Lots of rain brings hail and flooding

Going from being bone dry to having places flooding was quite the deal. June 20 we received about an inch and a half of rain. This put a pause on our side dressing because it was too wet to run, but we had most of our side dressing done by then.

Maybe tomorrow

S “Hey, how are you? Good, you?” The words roll off your tongue to the passerby with your best fake smile as your thoughts are quickly jerked back to the pulsating pain. At this point, any version of the truth would leave you on the brink of tears or with the feeling of burdening someone with an explanation of how you really are, neither of which you have the energy for right now.

Gregory County 4-H hosts horse show and workshops

Gregory County 4-H held the 2023 Horse Show on Wednesday, June 28th, 2023. Gregory County 4-H had a year to remember with 19 youth contestants participating in the Gregory County Horse Show. This year we had 4 senior contestants, 6 junior contestants, and 9 beginner contestants. The event concluded with ribbons and awards for all participation. This year, all around recipients were given buckles from Hailey & Hayden Haiar, in memory of Cory Haiar. Lauryn Diekmann received All-Around Beginner Girl, Tucker Smikle received All-Around Beginner Boy, Brooklyn Bailey received All-Around Junior Girl, Dale Smikle received All-Around Junior Boy, Hailey Haiar received All-Around Senior Girl, and Hayden Haiar received All-Around Senior Boy. Gregory County 4-H would like to congratulate all participants on the hard work they have put in and would like to thank all the parents that helped make the Horse Show such a success.
