Over the weekend I texted a rancher friend regarding this topic as he inspected his pastures. I noted, in summary “The height of grass is good to know in the month of May and reflecting on how the healthy soil organisms are using the precipitation and temperature in order to release the free soil mineral Nitrogen, typically held up on unhealthy grasslands.” This knowledge can make a difference, at minimum, 40% more feed in August & September.

For the week ending April 27, 2025, there were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 25% very short, 40% short, 34% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 34% very short, 44% short, 22% adequate, and 0% surplus.

South Dakota farmers & ranchers in DC

A small group of South Dakota family farmers and ranchers are in Washington, D.C. this week asking Congressional leaders to end the Trade War, pass a Farm Bill and adhere to the Constitution. The advocacy effort is organized by South Dakota Farmers Union in collaboration with National Farmers Union.

Thrive or just survive?

Beef imports into the United States market have exploded over the past two years, and no one in the industry wants to say anything about it. Beef imports for the entire eight-year period from 2015 through 2022 averaged 266 million pounds per month, but for the two-year period from 2023 through February of this year, they averaged 359 million pounds per month. That’s a monthly average increase of 94 million pounds during the past two years – a 35% increase.

Students attend safety fair at auditorium

On Friday, April 25, 2025, Gregory students in grades begindergarten through eighth attended a safety fair put on in partnership between the Gregory Police Department, Gregory County Sheriff Department, Avera Gregory Hospital, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

A hometown salute to Lt. Colonel Eugene H. Boortz

On April 25, 2025, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Eugene H. Boortz, a proud son of Gregory, South Dakota, and veteran of the United States Air Force, embarked on a remarkable journey of remembrance and recognition. At 87 years old, Lt. Col. Boortz joined 88 fellow veterans on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., where they visited the war memorials dedicated to those who served in the WW2, Korean, and Vietnam wars. They also had the opportunity to visit the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

Gregory Drama Department opens curtain on Badger this weekend

This Friday and Saturday, May 2-3, 2025, the Gregory Drama Department will be presenting Badger by Don Zolidis at Dixon Townhall Theatre at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Join them as they revisit one of the most difficult times in American history – World War II.
