Funeral services for Arnold Songer, Sr., were held on Friday, June 7, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Winner Ideal Community Hall in Winner, SD, with Pastor Tonweya Sherman officiating. Casket bearers were Dominic Parshall, Nick Songer, Steve Kautz, Raven Songer, Josh Abdo, Aaron Black Thunder, Patrick Songer, and Zach Eaglehawk. Alternate casket bearers were Leonard Boyer, Jose Aguirre, and Darius Black Thunder. Honorary casket bearers were Janet Parshall, Melvin Songer, Ronnie Songer, Myron Songer, James Songer, Harold Songer, and Donald Songer.

Interment was in the Advent Cemetery in Mosher, SD. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Arnold (Arnie) Dean Songer Sr. was born on June 7, 1969, to Leonard and Joanne (Cloudman) Songer. He was the youngest of eleven children.

Arnold had eight children, seven with Sue Roubideaux and one with Maria Dog Soldier. He tragically lost his oldest children Arnie and Avalencia to a house fire. He also lost a daughter Aimee during the early stages of life.

Arnold was a jack-of-all trades, working for several people and places in the Winner and Mitchell area.

Arnold was known by all for his contagious laughter, one-of-a kind sayings, and endless jokes. His sense of humor lives on with his family and friends. You could find Arnold spending many days having a good time with family and friends at the river, fishing and drinking beer.

Arnold passed away on May 28, 2024, at Avera Gregory Healthcare Center at the age of 55.

Arnold is preceded in death by his children: Arnold Jr., Avalencia, and Aimee; parents Leonard and Joanne Songer; sisters Arlene and Maxine; brother Myland; infant sister; several aunts, uncles, cousins; and grandchildren.

He is survived by his children: Dominic (Wrena) Parshall of Gregory, SD, Samantha (Dwayne) Richards of Nevada, Germaine (Kaileb) Valburg of Rapid City, SD, Aaron (Journey) Dog Soldier of Sioux Falls, SD, and Nicholas Songer of Brookings, SD; grandchildren ZhenDaya, Cecelia, DeMontae, Genesis, Kaizlee, Alayah, Amaziah, Kekoa, Keahiwai, Kapua, Kawehi, Keanu, Kymani, Kareen, Katana, Kaleea, A’maria, Alizabeth, and Aaron Jr.; sister Janet Parshall; five brothers: Melvin, Myron, Ronnie, James and Harold; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Some of Arnold’s sayings were: I’m big poppa puff (slaps his belly). Move it move it. It is what it is. Whatcha doing dooder? Gone fishing. I still got my one tooth. I need my coffee. Lights are on, but no one is home.
