A funeral service for James Lee Liewer, age 77, of Boyd County, Nebraska, was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Butte. Fr. Bernard Starman officiated. Laura Reiman was the lector, John Reiman and Jake Ohri were the servers, and Steve Liewer was the extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. Ann Albro and Carol Herman were in charge of registrations. Music was provided by Mike Baldwin, accompanied by Pat Thiry on organ. Casket bearers were Cullen Davis, RJ Dummer, Leonard Zuhlke, Cory Davis, Todd Dummer, Colin Zuhlke, and Patrick Wismer. Interment was at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Butte. Clausen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James Lee Liewer was born in Lynch, Nebraska, on July 16, 1948, to Alfons and Leona (Wesley) Liewer.

Jim was raised on the family farm west of Butte. He attended Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic School through the eighth grade then attended Butte High School and graduated with the class of 1966.

After proudly serving his country for two years in the Army, based at Fort Lewis, Washington, and Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Jim attended college at University of Nebraska School of Technical Agriculture. On June 10, 1972, Jim married Sandra (Kolbo) Liewer. They returned to the life he loved, making their home in rural Boyd County where they raised their six children — Jeanne, Tom, Joe, Pamela, Debra and Douglas.

He was a steward of the land and lived a life grounded in hard work, strong faith, and devotion to his family. Farming and ranching was not just his livelihood, but his way of life. He took great pride in working the land, caring for his animals and crops, and providing for those he loved through honest labor and perseverance.

Faith was the foundation of his life. Jim trusted deeply in God and lived his beliefs through kindness, humility, generosity, and service to others. Whether through his church, his community, or quiet acts of compassion, he touched many lives with his steady presence and unwavering values.

He was known for his strength, wisdom, and willingness to lend a helping hand to family and friends. He enjoyed time spent with family, sharing stories, and the simple blessings of rural life. He looked forward to family gatherings ,whether it was a celebration, working cattle, hunting, fishing, or enjoying the beauty of Boyd County and the Niobrara River where he spent his whole life.

Jim passed away on May 26, 2026, at the age of 77, years at home. Jim is survived by wife Sandra of nearly 54 years; children Jeanne (Cory) Davis of Bonesteel, South Dakota, Tom Liewer and Joe Liewer of Butte, Pamela (Todd) Dummer of Bonesteel, South Dakota, Debra (Colin) Zuhlke of Creighton, Nebraska, and Douglas Liewer of Columbus, Nebraska; three grandsons — Cullen Davis, RJ Dummer, and Leonard Zuhlke; siblings Marvin Liewer, Ronnie Liewer, and Deanna (Tim) Wismer; father-in-law Raymond Kolbo; sister-in-law Jackie (Dan) Keyser; brother-in-law Jim (Jean) Kolbo; and many nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents Alfons and Leona Liewer; infant brother Joseph; sister-in-law Kathryn Liewer; and mother-in-law Shirley Kolbo.
