Funeral services for Jan Carter were held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. John Lutheran church in Gregory, SD, with pastor Marcus Ring officiating.

Music was provided by Melanie Hannahs organist, and Connie Rajewich and Shelby Schell were in charge of registration and flower attendants. Casket bearers were Cooper Rasmussen, Cayden Rasmussen, Carson Rasmussen, John Rasmussen, Michael Rasmussen, and Steve Chilson. Honorary casket bearers were Marasia Warren, Marielle Warren, and Antonio Warren. Interment was in the Hillview Cemetery in Dallas, SD. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jan Marie (Rasmussen) Carter was born to Theodore and Anna (Krol) Rasmussen in Vermillion, SD on January 12, 1956. Jan was the youngest of five siblings. Her siblings were Morris, Maynard, Leonard and Colleen. She graduated from Vermillion High School in 1974, and attended Sioux Empire College in Hawarden, IA and then the University of South Dakota.

On December 29, 1983, Jan married Robert Carter, and moved to Gregory, SD. Together they raised their three children, Chad William, Nichole Dawn and Cole Robert. Anyone who knew Jan, knew she was a devoted Gregory Gorilla fan, and spent many years in the stands watching and supporting her children.

Jan worked as a secretary at the Gregory United Methodist Church and also enjoyed teaching Sunday School.

Jan started working for Avera Medical Clinic in 1990 where she remained until her retirement in 2023. Her smile and quick wit were sure to brighten your day. She was always striking up conversations and made many wonderful friends along the way. Jan enjoyed scrapbooking and making treats for her family and friends. No one ever went hungry when she was around.

Her six grandchildren were a highlight of her life. She enjoyed watching them play sports and was their biggest fan and loudest cheerleader. She was known as Grandma Jan by their teammates and families.

Jan passed away on Friday, September 20, 2024, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, at the age of 68.

Jan is survived by her children: Chad (Kara), Nichole (Marlon) and Cole; grandchildren: Cooper, Cayden, Carson, Marasia, Marielle, and Antonio; siblings: Morris (Marian) Rasmussen, Leonard (Sharon) Rasmussen, and Colleen Ricklefs; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Carter; her parents Theodore and Anna Rasmussen; and her brother and sister-in-law Maynard and Judy Rasmussen.
