Mass of Christian burial for Jane Leibel, age 79, of Mobridge, SD, was held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mobridge, SD. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Mobridge. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge was in charge of arrangements. Jane Frances Leibel was born December 30, 1944, in Mobridge, SD, to Anton (Tony) and Frances (Martian) Leibel, the second oldest of seven children.
Jane attended Glencross Elementary School through the eighth grade and graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1962. She continued her education at Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD, finishing her degree at Northern State University in Elementary Education, after which she taught at Glenham, Dupree and Gregory, South Dakota.
In 2000, she decided she could retire and have time to do some traveling any time of the year, which was one of many things she enjoyed doing, and so she did, visiting many places both in the Unted States and several other countries. It was also during this time she was a caregiver to her parents.
Besides traveling, she also enjoyed playing cards whenever family and friends visited. She would always be willing to try new recipes, especially if there would be family or friends around to enjoy them. In her earlier years as an accomplished seamstress, she sewed much of her own wardrobe. After getting hooked on quilting, most of her time was spent stitching her sought-after quilts cherished by her siblings, nieces, nephews and anyone else fortunate enough to receive one. The weekly coffee groups were looked forward to. Her nieces and nephews nicknamed her GI Jane and for many years she wore a GI JANE license plate on her vehicle.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Altar Society and enjoyed being a member of the Choir, was on the Board of Directors at the Museum, devoting much of her time helping with fundraising, and belonged to the River Rippers Sewing Group.
Jane passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents Tony and Frances Leibel; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Pam; nephew Patrick Leibel; and several aunts and uncles.
She is survived by her siblings: Robert and wife Gladys of Hobbs, NM, Marian and husband Doug Janas of Guernsey, WY, Anthony (Tony) and wife Cathy of Hart, TX, Merle and wife Renee of Glencross, SD, and Ron and wife JoAnn of Herriman, UT; 16 nieces and nephews, as well as, great nieces, nephews, cousins; and her Aunt Helen Martian.
