Funeral services for Loren Sengelmann were held on Monday, August 7, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. at the Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home in Gregory, SD. Reading of the obituary and prayer was given by Heidi Moser. Burial will be in the Vivian Cemetery in Vivian, SD, at a later date. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home in Gregory, SD, was in charge of arrangements. Loren Duane Sengelmann was born on August 20, 1949, in Pierre, SD, to Hans and Esther Sengelmann. Loren and his family spent his years growing up in Gregory and Vivian, SD. Loren attended school through the eighth grade and was proud to have been taught by his mom, Esther. Loren grew up creating treasured memories with his family and friends that he shared with anyone he met.

In 1980, Loren moved to Sesdac in Vermillion, SD. Through his many years at Sesdac, Loren created many lasting friendships. Loren was involved in the Special Olympics, was a member of the United Methodist Church, held various jobs, enjoyed volunteering, and participated in numerous activities.

Loren was known for being a loyal friend to anyone he met and rarely forgot anyone he ever met. Loren was a memorable person. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his laugh, and his little smirk every time he shared a joke or told a story. Loren was the best storyteller and enjoyed sharing his stories of growing up, his family, the trouble he got himself into, and all the many adventures he had. Hearing Loren sing “Davey Crockett” or perform his renditions of the Loren Sengelmann Show while strumming his guitar was a favorite of many staff, friends, and roommates.

Loren was a man of routine and always made sure to get his prayers in daily, as well as listen and sing along to his records from his endless record collection. He enjoyed playing Bingo, and card games, especially Solitaire, and watching Hogan’s Heroes, Dr. Phil, and Kelo- Land Living. He was known for his great sense of style, always wearing his pocket shirt, two pocket flannels, and a tie, and making sure he had enough pockets for his wallet and pens.

Loren was a collector of many things and treasured every single item, picture, and trinket. His endless collection of trains, tractors, and pictures truly showed the things that Loren valued most in his life; he treasured so many prized possessions from the people that meant so much to him. His memory will forever live on in the many memories that Loren left with anyone who was blessed to be a part of his life.

Loren passed away on August 3, 2023, at the age of 73 years.
