It’s national disability employment awareness month

I’ve spent a lot of time lately talking about South Dakota being ranked one of the hardest working states in the nation. And we continue to be the number one state for economic recovery — Moody’s Analytics has our economy operating at 105% on its “Back to Normal Index”. Despite all these positive economic indicators, businesses here are still struggling with a common challenge: workforce shortages.

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

Sometime in the early 1880’s, a small band of rustlers who stole both cattle and horses west of the Missouri River, organized into what would be by 1900 a large and innovative gang of thieves. They were able to steal thousands of livestock in a year from their neighbors in south central South Dakota.

Edward L. Senn, editor of the Pioneer, a weekly newspaper published in Iona since early 1901 had been denouncing the cattle rustlers and demanding that they be brought to justice. Because of his strong and persistent pleas for law and order, he had made himself so obnoxious to the thieves that they decided to show their hatred for him.

I am back from the also dry North. However, conditions at my home location were better than expected because of early August rains. Or as a friend put it, one end of the field was often different from the other. A lot of crop was baled because cattle feed is so scarce and valuable.
