Pheasant hunting is a tradition worth preserving

From the Black Hills to the eastern plains, the familiar sound of shotgun blasts can usually be heard popping in the distance. It’s hunting season and we are starting to get into my favorite time of year: pheasant season.

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

The cattle industry is indigenous (native, original) to America. The manner and scale upon which it prevailed west of the one-hundredth meridian existed nowhere else in the world. This enterprise originated in southwest Texas and from there it spread throughout the Great Plains.

Buffalo Roundup is a one-of-a-kind experience

The Buffalo Roundup is one of my favorite events to host as the governor. Once a year, tens of thousands of spectators gather on a hillside at Custer State Park to watch 60 cowboys and cowgirls (along with a dozen 4WD vehicles) round up almost 1,500 American Bison. It’s an amazing scene that brings our history and culture to life, and all for a good cause.

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

In the 1890’s, cattle rustlers were well organized and active up and down the Missouri River between Nebraska and what would later become North Dakota. They were also willing to commit murder to protect their identity.
