LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor: Regarding the property located at 524E. 6th Street, at the corner of Logan and E. 6th: I am not a resident of the City of Gregory. However, during my time working as the Field Appraiser for the Assessor’s office, I had the unique opportunity to inspect many properties in Gregory County. The experience helped me to develop respect and appreciation for the history of this county. Over the years, I have watched a number of structurally sound buildings be razed, as well as others that were not worth salvaging. However, it is because of my experience, I consider this particular house to be one of the unique homes in the county. It was constructed above average in quality in comparison to many older homes across the area. This is one reason I believe this house is worthy of consideration for preservation.

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

“Back to school” can refer to any time from late July to after Labor Day, depending on where in the United States you live. According to a recent Pew Research report which was just published, “about 70% of the 46.7 million public school students in the United States were back in class by August 25th.” Depending on where you grew up or live now, your reaction might vary from “That sounds about right,” to “Already?” or “What took them so long?”

I launched the “Freedom Works Here” nationwide workforce recruitment campaign in June to tell South Dakota’s story to America. South Dakota has seen unprecedented economic success over the last several years.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor, Senator Tobin boasts that South Dakota had a budget surplus of $96 million. This seems impressive, until you learn that South Dakota receives over $2 billion dollars in federal money, coming from states that actually pay into the federal government. How long will tax- payers in California and New York want to pay higher taxes in order to subsidize South Dakota?

Beef checkoff harms producers

There’s important legislation that should be included in the 2023 Farm Bill. It’s called the Opportunities for Fairness in Farming Act, or OFF Act, and it updates and reforms the beef checkoff program, which hasn’t had any meaningful updates for nearly 40 years. The OFF Act will disallow lobbying groups from receiving checkoff dollars and will impart transparency and accountability to the governmentrun program.

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

The Territory of Dakota was situated about midway between the two great oceans, and between the parallels of latitude 420 30’ and 490 of north latitude, the latter parallel forming the northern boundary of the United States.

I was recently at the edge of “The Land of the Free” - the southern border. I’ve been to the border before, but this was my first time seeing it from the air.

A Canadian Perspective

Hi, readers. I hope you had an enjoyable summer. Just back from Sask. and I will deal with what everyone is talking about: the weather - the new, not normal, unpredictable forecasts which change twice a day, and the extreme events worldwide. I know climate change and global warming deniers still exist despite what they can see with their own eyes. The GOP debate showed the political reality of this.
