A Note From Cottonwood Corners

While doing research on the history of horse roundups in America, I came across an amazing event which took place during the last days of World War II. It involved the rescue of the Lipizzaner stallions which were directly in the path of the advancing Russian army. They would have slaughtered the last remaining survivors of that historic breed had they not been rescued. The Red Army was on a collision course with the remaining brigades of the SS, an elite and fanatical Nazi unit in Czechoslovakia.

A Canadian Prespective

Bonjour! I did six years of French in school; I can read it but not speak it because Canada is officially bilingual and all packaging must be. The only Ukrainian I know is bilingual “di borjas” (I don’t know what it means) which is what you say before downing a shot of vodka. De borjas!!! to the brave and determined Ukrainians who are resisting the paranoid megalomaniac invasion of their country in his attempt to go backwards into the future by re-establishing the Soviet Union of 30 years ago. That Soviet Union disintegrated starting with the “Solidarity” movement in Poland. Remember Pres. Reagan’s “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall - which reunited Germany.

Whenever you hear someone mention the “1902 Roundup,” you automatically think about the rounding up of all cattle west of the Missouri River which had strayed from their home range. Most had traveled to the southeast during the winter months because of the blizzards, deep snow covering the grass, and bitter winds. Some were even moved along by their owners to save the forage on their own range and also save their cattle from starvation.

South Dakota: The state for business

But that is not the big news. During my first State of the State address, I announced that I wanted South Dakota to lead the nation, raising the bar in everything we did.

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

With the construction of Fort Randall in Dakota Territory on the west bank of the Missouri River just above the current Nebraska-South Dakota state line in 1856, the military occupation of the upper Missouri had begun. By 1860, two military posts had been established in the present state of Wyoming, one in Nebraska, and one in South Dakota.
