Elf on the Shelf, banana store, and quiz bowl all good news at school board meeting

The Gregory school library has acquired four new 3-D printers, and Librarian Holly Whitney has been putting them to good use. Whitney and Jaimie Braun presented the Gorilla Good News at the meeting of the Gregory School District Board of Education on Monday, January 12, 2026. As part of the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities Mrs. Whitney leads in the library, the 3-D printers provide additional hands-on opportunities for the students to design and print various projects. Mrs. Whitney also uses the printers to produce items for the “Banana Store” where students cash in their banana bucks earned for positive behavior.

New County Board of Commissioners starts new year looking like the old

The first order of business as the Gregory County Board of Commissioners opened their first regular meeting of 2026 on Tuesday, January 6, was election of chair and vice chair. Commissioner Byrain Boes nominated Jessy Biggins for another term as chair, and the board was quick to approve the selection. Doug Janousek was also elected to continue in his role as vice chair.

Gregory team places second at Q1073 Quiz Bowl

The Gregory Quiz Bowl Team brought $500 home on Saturday by placing second in the Q1073 Quiz Bowl championship in Mitchell. Parker won the championship. Other teams who qualified for the final eight were Dakota Christian, Platte-Geddes, Menno, Mt. Vernon, Mitchell Public, and Sanborn Central.

Coming soon: Gregory PopUp Book Shop

The husband and wife duo of Jamie and Michael Thompson have been hard at work getting their new business, Gregory PopUp Book Shop ready to open in what used to be the flower shop on Main Street. With the light at the end of the tunnel now in sight, they have scheduled a grand opening for March 1, 2026.

Gregory County 4-H kicks off 2026 with creative wreath-making workshop

Gregory County 4-H rang in the New Year with its first workshop of 2026—a hands-on wreath making event led by local 4-H volunteer Erin Schulte and 4-H Program Assistant Morgan Rozeboom. The workshop brought youth together to learn both the art and technique behind making visually appealing wreaths while encouraging creativity and sustainability.

Memorable moments of 2025 in Gregory County

January Abbie Simpson and Dani Carlson’s art was selected to represent Burke in the Augustana High School Art Invitational at Eide/ Dalrymple Gallery at Augustana January 16-February 7. Dan and Trisha Cahoy of Bonesteel were named 2025 South Dakota Retailer of the Year by the South Dakota Retailers Association.
