Gregory American Legion to host Purple Heart dinner and ceremony

In tribute to the valor and sacrifice of America’s military heroes, Governor Larry Rhoden has officially proclaimed Thursday, August 7, 2025, as “Purple Heart Recognition Day” across South Dakota. This observance, initiated at the request of the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, calls on all residents to honor and remember those who have been wounded or killed in action while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

From property to purchases: Task force considering fundamental tax shift to reduce homeowner burden

Members of a task force aiming to reduce the property tax burden for South Dakota homeowners are considering proposals to reduce or replace property taxes by relying on sales or transaction taxes. The task force dug into two proposals and heard a new idea from a former lawmaker at its latest meeting in Rapid City earlier this month.

Chip seal and fog seal projects planned in the Mitchell area

Beginning on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, chip seal and fog seal applications will be applied to several highways in the Mitchell surrounding area. The contractor will move from one project to the next in the following order: · S.D. Highway 38 – the project begins from the junction of U.S. Highway 81 at Salem and runs 17 miles east to Humboldt. The chip seal work on this section is anticipated to be complete in three days and the fog seal will take an additional two days; · U.S. Highway 81 – the project begins from the junction of S.D. Highway 38 at Salem and runs one mile north to the north edge of Salem. The chip seal work on this section is anticipated to be complete in one day and the fog seal will take an additional day; · S.D. Highway 262 and S.D. Highway 42 – the project begins from the junction of S.D. Highway 262 and S.D Highway 42 at Bridgewater and runs five miles east to the junction of U.S. Highway 81. The chip seal work on this section is anticipated to be complete in one day and the fog seal will take an additional day; · S.D. Highway 46 – the project begins just west of the junction of 393 Avenue located west of Wagner and runs one mile east to Wagner. The chip seal work on this section is anticipated to be complete in one day and the fog seal will take an additional day; and · U.S. Highway 18 - this shoulder project begins at Dallas and runs 13 miles east to where the concrete ends east of Burke. The chip seal work on this section is anticipated to be complete in two days and the fog seal will take an additional day.

AG warns South Dakotans of storm weather repair scams

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley warns South Dakotans impacted by recent severe weather to be careful of transit vendors offering to do storm repairs. “In the aftermath of severe weather, scammers often prey on vulnerable homeowners with promises of quick and cheap repairs,” said Attorney General Jackley.
