First human West Nile Virus case of 2025 reported in Brookings County

On July 16, 2025 the South Dakota Department of Health confirmed the first human West Nile virus (WNV) case of the 2025 season in a resident of Brookings County. South Dakota has reported more than 2,864 human cases and 54 deaths since WNV was first reported in 2002.

South Dakota 9-1-1 call centers have recently began implementing the RapidSOS Unite GIS module, an AI-powered intelligent safety platform that securely connects life-saving data from over 540 million devices, apps, and sensors directly to 9-1-1 centers and first responders across the state.
