Robert Sperl

Funeral services for Robert Sperl were held on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the Congregational Church in Gregory, SD, with Pastor Scott McClellen officiating. Music was provided by Geoff Smith and recorded music. Kimberly Veskrna and Kathy Svoboda were in charge of registration. Casket bearers were Allen Veskrna, Michael Veskrna, Joe Svoboda, Jim Mikkelsen, Dave Dobesh, Joel Bartling, DJ Steffen, and Joe Duling. Honorary pallbearers were Ella Sperl, Morrie Gilkerson, Sully Sperl, and Sawyer Sperl. Burial was in the Czech National Cemetery in Gregory, SD. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jan Determan

Funeral services for Jan Determan, age 69, of Burke, SD, are scheduled to be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burke, SD. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Burke, SD. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., with a 7:00 p.m. rosary to be held at the church. Clausen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Janet “Jan” Marie Determan, daughter of Romus and Helen (Jaeger) Mushitz, was born on July 21, 1954, in Pierre, SD. She was adopted by Romus and Helen Mushitz and was the oldest of three adopted children.

Ronald Shomion

Funeral services for Ronald Shomion were held on Monday, February 12, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. at the Heartland Funeral Home. Burial was in the SD Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors. Heartland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Ronald Arthur Shomion was born on April 27, 1945, to Arthur and Mary (Gibbons) Shomion, in Little Rock, AK, as one of three children. As a child of a military father, he resided in two other countries including Germany and Japan. He graduated high school in Alexandria, VA. Ron then attended SDSU, playing football and track. He was an avid Jackrabbit fan.

Cecil Harsin, Sr.

Funeral services for Cecil Lewis Harsin, Sr. were scheduled for Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.

Delila Howe

Delila was born on November 19, 1934, to Noble Manning Inglett and Viola (Smith) Inglett in Lucas, SD. She grew up on the family ranch. She was one of seven children. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Lucas, and frequently rode her horse Star to school. She graduated from Burke High School and Clarkson College Nursing School, Omaha, NE. She had a storied career. In the ‘60’s she was AMA’s research nurse of the year, for her work on the ‘iron lung’ and the first dialysis program at the University of Minnesota.

Dale Goodman

Funeral services for Dale Goodman, age 85, of Herrick, SD, were held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at the United Methodist Church in Burke, SD, with Reverend Thaniel Certa-Werner officiating. Music was provided by Twylah Ward, and Donna Whittmeier was in charge of registration. Casket bearers were Michael Roth, Mick Roth, Mark Roth, Matthew Holmberg, Matthew Collins, and Robert Polacek. Burial was in the Herrick Cemetery in Herrick, SD. Clausen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Dale Francis Goodman was born November 19, 1938 to Francis and Edna (Zeiner) Goodman. Dale grew up on the family farm south of Herrick, SD. He attended Goodman Country School through the eighth grade and attended one year in Naper, NE.

Marleen Mawhinney

Marleen was born on July 18, 1943, in Winner, SD, to Peter and Mary (Flemming) Struck, and grew up all over South Dakota. As a child, Marleen enjoyed watching and playing baseball. She said while attending country school it was always a popular game to play. Marleen was a long-time Minnesota Twins fan, and also grew to become a Denver Bronco, Nebraska Husker, and Kansas City Chief fan. On September 21, 1963, Marleen married Gary Mawhinney. They were married 42 years before Gary passed away. They raised three daughters and one son: Marjorie Struck of Florida, Kim (Rob) Benson of Iowa, Robert Mawhinney of Colorado, and Jennifer (Jeffrey) Raburn of Kansas.

Jeffrey Hamling

A celebration of life for Jeffrey Hamling, is scheduled for Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home of Rapid City, SD. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Jeffrey Hamling was born July 12, 1947, to Jerold and Natella in Gregory, SD. Jeffrey served in the US Army. Jeffrey married Norma Roggow on June 5, 1968. They had two children: Aaron and Rhonda. He farmed in Naper, NE. They then moved to Rapid City and continued to work at Dakota Craft for 12 years then they moved to Burke, SD, before moving back to Rapid City, SD in 2019. He enjoyed fishing, watching Husker Football, camping, and many years of enjoying his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Lance Schmitz

Funeral services for Lance Schmitz were held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the Prairie View Gospel Barn in Gregory, SD, with Pastor Russ Grim officiating.

Cynthia Williams

Cynthia Jane Williams was born July 25, 1940 to Relly and Dorothy (Madison) Williams. She passed away on December 19, 2023 at the Rock County Hospital in Bassett, NE. Jane had three sisters, Jysten, Janis (who’s birthday was 9 years to the date Jane was born) and Billie Judy. When Jane was born Janis was so happy and proud that she ran up and down the street saying “I have a brand-new baby sister”, which made them have a special bond. Her special bond with Billie Judy was also special even though at times they would have different views. Jane always knew Billie’s husband had her back.
