The Great Seal of the United States contains a phrase – “E Pluribus Unum,” “out of many, one.” Out of a nation filled with many different people of many different backgrounds comes one government that is elected “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”

During the City Council meeting last Monday, it was reported that Darwin Grim seconded the motion to raise the Chamber Director’s salary and benefits. Grim actually voted against the decision. Guhner Kepler seconded the motion.

The great wave of patriotism which swept over the American people fo l l owing the secession of the southern states did not escape the Dakotans. Although there were only a handful of them, they began to agitate for the organization of a regiment of soldiers for the war.

After General Harney and his men reached Fort Pierre in the late fall of 1855, he and his officers were all dissatis fied with the site. After a thorough inspection of the location, they found the whole establishment in “bad order, bad condition, and bad repair.” The buildings were so dilapidated that they would have to be rebuilt -- everything, in fact, was nearly worthless.

Dear Editor, In response to Senator Tobin’s column on 8/9/23: We can have differing opinions, but the fact that Senator Tobin doesn’t want the people of South Dakota to have a vote on the issue of abortion is a disappointingly undemocratic position by an elected official, while also a clear sign of how weak Senator Tobin thinks her arguments are.

I didn’t think I’d find so much Jesus at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. He’s everywhere all the time, but I didn’t expect to feel his presence at a pancake breakfast at the Buffalo Chip.

Last week’s edition of the Gregory Times-Advocate had a story about development in Gregory. It showed a photo of a sign for Star Lake Outfitters and indicated that they owned the lot where the sign was posted. They do not own the lot. The sign is an advertisement for the business and will soon include an arrow pointing to it. The lot is actually owned by an entity called Queeniage A1 LLC.

Four first-time deer hunters will have the opportunity to participate in a managed youth deer hunt and camp on Dec. 8-10 at Brown’s Lodge and Hunting Ranch in Gettysburg, S.D.
