The Daily Press and Dakotan of March 8, 1880, reported on page one that “A large amount of ice is running today. River two feet one inch above low water mark, a fall of eight inches in twenty-four hours.” The story went on to report that the river current had taken away a large slice of the river bank below Mc-Cully’s water tank; however, an ice gorge had fortified the shore against further immediate injury.

Monday, April 24, 2023, Governor Noem signed Executive Order 2023-05 expanding job opportunities to South Dakotans without a postsecondary degree. The order requires executive branch agencies to consider work and life experiences during the hiring process when a postsecondary degree is not required to perform the duties of the job.

I am writing this on Earth Day, which was created to commemorate the work of Rachel Carson in the 1960s. She showed that all species on earth have an ecological relationship which maintains environmental stability. I taught high school biology using textbooks created with this ecological viewpoint. This article will deal only with the worldwide crisis of global warming /climate change/ weather weirding, which is part of our constant conversation, and if nothing is done, our grandchildren will bear the consequences.

Burial for Imogene Wittenhagen to be held Imogene Shaffer Wittenhagen, age 88, formerly of Gregory, SD, passed away on April 8, 2023, at St. Martin’s Village Nursing Home in Rapid City, SD. Her funeral mass was held on Friday, April 14, at the Blessed Sacrament in Rapid City, SD. Her burial will be held on Saturday, April 22, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Gregory, SD.

It was on August 1, 1908 that folks living in South Dakota first heard about Mrs. Mary Sully, widow of Jack Sully, filing a federal law suit to have land allotted to her and the descendants of Jack under the General Allotment Act of 1887. That matter would not be resolved until March of 1912 when the United States Supreme Court awarded 8,960 acres of land on the Rosebud to Mrs. Sully and Jack’s descendants.

It can be difficult to talk to someone close to you about how much they are drinking. As someone who is close to them you are often one of the first people to recognize the signs or changes in their behavior.

On Monday, April 17, 2023, Governor Kristi Noem applauded the passage of the social studies standards revisions by the Board of Education Standards: “Today is a wonderful day for the students in South Dakota. They are our future,” said Governor Noem. “Now, they will be taught the best social studies education in the country, one that is a true accounting of our history. We want our children to have honest and factual classroom teaching so they can be engaged participants in our civil society for the rest of their lives.”
