Dear Editor: Missouri River Energy Services of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and MidAmerican Energy Company of Des Moines, Iowa, would like you to believe that the Gregory County Pumped Storage Project is beneficial to “our region.” We disagree. 2022 is on track to be another fantastic year for economic investment in South Dakota. Since I took office, I have championed our state as the best place in the country to do business. We had all the ingredients to succeed, even before the COVID pandemic hit, but now we’re breaking records for economic growth and business investment.

Applications are currently being accepted from South Dakota high school students interested in serving as pages for the 2023 Legislative Session. Pages are appointed to serve in the House of Representatives or the Senate for one of five terms during January, February, and March.

On Monday, September 12, Governor Kristi Noem announced that following several weeks of medical treatment in South Dakota for a back injury, the Governor underwent successful back surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will be hosting a “Coffee and Conversation” event in Charles Mix County on September 21, 2022, at the American Legion Post in Wagner, SD, from 10:00 until noon. Working in partnership with your county veterans service officer, the Department wants the opportunity to visit one-on- one with veterans and see what’s brewing!

The missionaries and fur trappers were the first “outsiders” to move into the Dakota Territory.

Governor Kristi Noem and 21 of her fellow Republican governors sent a letter to President Biden saying they oppose his plan to forgive students their federal loans, saying that debt would then have to be paid for by taxpayers. “Only 16-17 percent of Americans have federal student loan debt, and yet, your plan will require their debts to be redistributed and paid by the vast majority of taxpayers,” wrote Governor Noem and her colleagues.

In June the South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR) approved an expanded alcohol sales policy, starting with the new school year.

High School students may apply now for the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) program to study abroad in Germany. ASSE is one of four well-established international exchange organizations that administer this prestigious program, which is jointly sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the German Bundestag (Parliament). ASSE has 50 scholarships available to American youth from the western and northwestern regions of the USA. ASSE is responsible for promoting the CBYX program, recruiting applicants, and selecting finalists. Students are encouraged to learn more and apply at www.UsaGermanyScholarship. org. The deadline to apply is December 1, 2022.
