Gregory county entities propose budgets for 2023

The regular meeting of the Gregory County Board of Commissioners was held at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 21, at the Gregory County Courthouse. Members assigned duties on SMRWMD board Jeff Johnson and Myron Johnson were appointed as delegates to the Southern Missouri Recycling & Waste Management District Management Board for the year of July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023.

Today, the Supreme Court announced something that countless Americans have prayed for over the past 50 years: they reversed the Roe v. Wade decision and allowed states to make their own choices over abortion policy. In South Dakota, we have a law on the books that makes abortion illegal immediately, except to preserve the life of the mother.

A Note From Cottonwood Corners

Not knowing exactly how many Indian tribes they would encounter between St. Louis and the Pacific Ocean, Lewis and Clark could only make a semi-educated guess as to how many gifts and trade goods they should carry. An examination of their expenditures reveals that Lewis spent about $720 on purchases that went for items which were exchanged with the Indians. These items were selected to not only supply some of the Indians’ anticipated wants but also to showcase some of the more attractive goods they might learn to want.

Residents in storm-damaged Castlewood still recovering

Residents of a small community in northeastern South Dakota are still recovering from a wave of destructive storms a month ago. Piles of debris and broken tree limbs sit on the edge of town in Castlewood, a community of about 600 near Watertown.

Mandatory 10-digit dialing goes into effect June 22, 2022

Initially, 10-digit dialing on Golden West lines was optional. Beginning June 22, 2022, you must dial 605 plus the telephone number for all in-state calls placed on Golden West phone lines. The area code is required whether the number you're calling is across the street or across the state. Most telephone service providers have been enforcing 10-digit dialing for many months, and all are required to do so very soon.

South Dakota is a 2nd Amendment sanctuary

Over the past two years, America has seen some of the most concerning attacks on freedom in our history. Governments seized previously unimagined power over our day-to-day lives. Churches were forced to close, forsaking freedom of religion. Big tech and government alike attempted to police speech, something that is supposed to be free for all. And though the Supreme Court seems poised to advance the right to life for all people, renewed attacks on that right are only just beginning.

Yesterday, June 14, was Flag Day. Both President Wilson, in 1916, and President Coolidge, in 1927, issued proclamations asking that June 14 be observed as Flag Day all across the country. However, it wasn’t until August 3, 1949, that Congress approved the national observance, and President Harry Truman signed it into law.
