No reported human exposure with infected bat; park consulting with health agencies CUSTER, S.D. – A bat at Jewel Cave National Monument has tested positive for rabies.

Every two seconds, someone’s life relies on a blood transfusion. Those in need range from burn victims to surgery patients to those fighting deadly diseases.

The South Dakota State Square, Folk, and Round Dance Association is sponsoring the Fall State Square Dance Festival in Hermosa, SD. The event will be held on September 11 and 12, 2026, and will be hosted by the Southern Hills Promenaders Square Dance Club. The theme of the festival is 'Dance in the Enchanted Forest!'.

Wide Open Spaces Foundation is humbled to announce another inductee to their Founding 50 honorees. Billie and Ruth Sutton were long-time supporters of all things rodeo, community, and family. Their addition to the Founding 50 honors their legacy of love for rodeo and their community, as well as their support for future generations of young people in our area.

This years Gregory County Achievement Days participants enjoyed 3 large improvements at the 4-H facilities on the rodeo grounds; the wash rack expansion, hog slats under the swine pens and continuous fence added to the outside of the animal barn. Gregory County leaders worked on procuring grants to expand the wash rack area to make it easier to wash more animals at a time and to have a specific space to wash swine.

Gregory County Historical Society receives donation for addition

After nearly 23 years of raising alpacas, Greg and Sandy Smith say the happiest day of the year is shearing day. They normally shear at the end of May, near Memorial Day. “The animals don’t necessarily enjoy the process of being sheared, but are happy, and cooler, when it’s done,” says Greg.

Library kicks off Summer Reading Program with “Touch a Truck” event

At the August 14, 2024, meeting of the Gregory County Historical Society, Richard and Juanita Peterson of Wewela, SD were there to donate items to the Gregory County Historical Museum in Dallas, SD. The couple donated a Lakota Sioux peace pipe, and tokens from Lucas.

Olivia Lou Reiser of Gregory, SD, was among 569 graduates who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln during a combined graduate and undergraduate commencement ceremony on August 17, 2024, at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
