Justin Rumford returns to the Burke Stampede

Ten years ago, the Burke Stampede Rodeo Committee was lucky enough to land a rising star of ro-deo…. Justin Rumford from Ponca City, Oklahoma as our rodeo funny man and entertainer. Nine time PRCA Clown of the Year and a set of triplets later, Rumford affectionately known as “Rump” will be returning to the Burke Stampede. We tried several times to get Justin back to the Stampede and this year, we got him!!! The Stampede Committee is excited to bring professional rodeo and professional entertainment of this caliber to this year’s rodeo.

4-H horse show was held Tuesday

Gregory County 4-H held the 2021 Horse Show on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. This year, we had 4 beginner contestants, and 3 junior contestants. Throughout the event, the Gregory County 4-H Leader’s Association provided lunch and snacks for all who attended with a freewill donation being collected. The event concluded with ribbons and awards for all participants. Brooklyn Bailey received All-Around Beginner, Brecken Vosika received All- Around Junior Girl, and Hayden Haiar received All-Around Junior Boy.

Arizmendis/Springer take over leader board

After six weeks, team Arizmendis-Springer have taken over the leaderboard. Team Biggins-Eklund are in second place and team Bakke-VanDerWerff are tied for third with team Croegaert-Hogue. Four points separate the leaders from the pack. The leaders for the week were teams Kruse-Schweigert, Sperl-Wernke, and Collins- Kartak. Be Biggins still holds the most points individually for the season followed by Rachel Springer, Cheryl Sperl and Denise Croegaert. Serena Bakke was the leader for the week by posting a birdie and three pars. Lois Kruse was only one-half point behind even though she says she never hits the ball. We hope to see more women in the clubhouse on Thursday.

Burke Riding Club hosts fun nights

The Burke Riding Club will once again be hosting Tuesday Fun Nights starting July 6th at the rodeo grounds. Start time is 6 p.m.

Gregory 8U caps successful season with second place finish

The Gregory 8u softball team ended their season Friday night at the league tournament in Chamberlain. They entered the tournament with 4 wins and 1 loss in Rosebud Softball League play and an overall record of 6-2 with their only losses being to Butte’s 12u team and a solid Lyman team. After an opening round bye in the league tournament, Gregory defeated Chamberlain in the semifinal round by a score of 13-3 to advance to the championship game against Lyman.

South Dakota Board of Regents: no medical pot on campus

Medical marijuana won’t be allowed on the campuses of South Dakota’s public universities, the Board of Regents announced on June 23. The board, which oversees the state’s six public universities, changed its policy on medical marijuana as the state prepares for the drug to be legalized on July 1.

“Miracle on the Missouri” program July 8 at Cultural Heritage Center

The “Miracle on the Missouri” will be the topic of a Thursday, July 8, program at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. Pickstown and the Fort Randall Dam were nicknamed “Miracle on the Missouri” because construction of the town and dam was essentially completed in 10 years.

Gregory Rookies baseball team captures Rosebud League championship

The Gregory Rookies won the Rosebud League Championship in Winner on Saturday, June 26, 2021. They defeated Winner Gold in the first round 8-0. They beat Winner Purple in round 2, 2-1 in extra innings. They defeated Lyman in the championship game 6-1.

Noem launches website for medical cannabis program

On Tuesday, June 22, Governor Kristi Noem, along with the South Dakota Department of Health and the South Dakota Department of Education, launched medcannabis.sd.gov, a website to answer questions and provide information about the upcoming medical cannabis program set to take effect on July 1, 2021.
