Billie Sutton Leadership Institute launches Rural Leadership Program

The Billie Sutton Leadership Institute recently announced the launch of a new rural leadership program, “Rural POWER,” dedicated to “Powering Opportunities While Energizing Rural.” Billie Sutton, founder of the nonprofit Sutton Leadership Institute, is excited to expand the programs offered by the Leadership Institute. Sutton knows the importance of rural issues in South Dakota and said: “Rural POWER is people focused, community minded, and about re-imaging rural South Dakota through servant leadership and community building." Rural POWER is a year-long leadership development program, sponsored by the South Dakota Farmers Union, focused specifically on rural South Dakota.

GMS students present play

Students from the Gregory Middle School returned to the stage this year performing their rendition of the play “The Crimson House Murder.” The play was held at the Dixon Town Hall Theatre on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and the attendees had plenty of scenes to smile and laugh about.

Winner highway reconstruction project to begin Mon., March 29

The Winner Area office of the South Dakota Department of Transportation says that the reconstruction of U.S. Highway 18 and the U.S. Highway18/S.D. Highway 44 junction is scheduled to start Monday, March 29, 2021.

Gymnasts show their talents on Sunday in Gregory

Despite wintery conditions tots on up to teenagers came to the Gregory School Gym Sunday, March 14, to showcase their gymnastics skills. Parents and grandparents came to cheer their gymnasts on as students proudly displayed their skills on beam, bars and floor.

Transgender sports bill is resurrected

Last week the ADVOCATE printed a story from the AP that the bill to promote continued fairness in women’s sports, HB 1217, had died in the Senate State Affairs committee. Based on legislative findings that “with respect to biological sex, one is either male or female” among other findings, the bill sought to block males from participating in female sports.
