The Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Dakota on January 9, 1873, passed an Act to punish adultery, which if found guilty, could result in being sentenced to the state penitentiary. Section 1 of the law specified: “Every person who shall commit the crime of adultery, shall be punished by imprisonment in the Territorial penitentiary not exceeding five years, and be fined not exceeding five (5) hundred dollars ($13,499 today), or either of said punishment, in the discretion of the court.”

When Jolene Baxa-Ward and her husband Mark acquired the Herrick Dance Hall in 2022, they didn’t have any big plans for the building. Jolene grew up in Herrick, and she and her husband come back to visit frequently.

The regular meeting of the Gregory County Board of Commissioners was held at 9 a.m., Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the Gregory County Courthouse. The final details of the courthouse’s new HVAC system should be finished up by the end of the week of October 20-25, and the cleaning crew was scheduled to come in over the weekend of October 25-26.
