The Nation watched the devastation of hurricane Helene which made landfall E of Tallahassee with 120 mph winds and up to 30 inches of rainfall, traveled more than 600 miles NNW causing death and destruction in less than a day. Asheville (pop. 100,000), a river city in the Smoky Mountains, is forever changed and was once considered a safe haven from these storms. Less than two weeks later Milton travels three days across the Gulf of Mexico, developing into a 400-mile diameter hurricane with 120+ mph winds, 12-foot storm surge, major rainfall and 45 preceding tornadoes. Florida will be a long time recovering. Where will we get our orange juice? These more frequent intense weather events are worldwide; Japan, China and Taiwan have had record typhoons (hurricanes developing in the Pacific) or drought wise, the Amazon is at its lowest level ever.

Boes put on hot seat again for fence

At the regular meeting of the Gregory County Board of Commissioners, held Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Chair Jessy Biggins discussed two phone calls he had received regarding the fence that Commissioner Byrain Boes recently installed alongside a section line road. The issue is that the fence is located in the right-of-way because the drop-off is too steep to move the fence out any farther. The callers argued that Boes is abusing his power as a commissioner in not following the setback requirement and even suggested he be removed from the board.

John Hansen to lead Gregory’s Homecoming parade on Friday

John Hansen has been selected as parade marshal to lead this year’s Homecoming parade at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 11, 2024. Hansen retired at the end of the 2023-24 school year after a record 50 years with the Gregory School District.

Rumor has it that a Bigfoot sighting will occur in Gregory before and during the Homecoming parade on Friday, October 11, 2024. This Bigfoot won’t shy away from cameras like the elusive character he is known to be.

Wipes are cause of backup in Gregory’s city’s sewer line

City Finance Officer Trudy Waterman reported that the public works department had been called to clear a plugged sewer line recently. Alice Slade contacted the city, reporting that her basement had filled up with raw sewage on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

Sons of American Legion to hold monthly meeting

The Sons of the American Legion will be holding their monthly meeting on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the Legion Post in Gregory, SD. The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. and all members and potential members are encouraged to attend.

Soren Walker Mikkelsen was born on September 19, 2024, to Nolyn and Josie Mikkelsen. He was welcomed home by older sister Elinor Marlene.

South Dakota minumum wage will increase January 1

Effective January 1, 2025, South Dakota’s minimum wage for nontipped employees will be $11.50 per hour, up from $11.20 per hour in calendar year 2024. For tipped employees, the hourly minimum wage for calendar year 2025 will be no less than $5.75 per hour, up from $5.60 in calendar year 2024.
