Ft. Randall Dam undergoing multi-year modernization project

The Fort Randall Dam is taking on a massive modernization effort as the Major Unit Rehabilitation Project is officially in motion. Over the next eight years, all eight units of the powerhouse will be replaced. The first of the new units started to arrive the week of July 9. These hydro-powered turbine units are over three stories tall, far too tall to be delivered in one piece. So, piece-by-piece, parts of the new unit will be delivered and set up at the staging grounds near and inside Ft. Randall Powerhouse. Over the next 18 months, the first old unit will be removed and the new pieces will be assembled into a brand new unit, marking one of the largest upgrades in the dam’s history. Standing more than three stories tall, each unit is a towering feat of engineering. After some testing to confirm the new unit is running smoothly, the rest of the units will be similarly removed and replaced two at a time.
