The military post, Fort Randall, stood along the west bank of the Missouri River in southeastern Gregory County for thirty-six years and five months between June 1856 and November 1892. During that time, it was one of the most important military posts on the Upper Missouri River and had quarters for five companies.

In South Dakota, we respect the Freedom to Work. That is what America was built on. We each have the Freedom to get up every morning and to provide for ourselves and our families. That’s the American Dream. South Dakotans continuously remind the rest of the country the value of hard work and the dignity it brings.

A number of the earliest towns established on the prairie of the upper Midwest disappeared from the map before the beginning of the 20th Century or shortly thereafter. There were numerous reasons for their passing; however, the location or relocation of the railroad was a significant factor. Losing the site of the “county courthouse” also contributed to changes on the map.

Shor t ly after 1900, two railroad towns – Evarts and Le Beau – appeared on the east side of the Missouri River just east of the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. Evarts was the first to become well-known. It was founded when the Milwaukee Railroad continued its Aberdeen line westward in anticipation of an extension across the Indian lands.
