Recruiting charge leads to work on clarifying SDHSAA policies

The South Dakota High School Activities Association board of directors is considering adding more specific language to its policy against recruiting student athletes from one school to another. “We had a charge of recruiting this year,” said SDHSAA Executive Director Dan Swartos, noting that it was the first one in his six years with the association.

Tripp and Gregory Counties Shooting Sports Clubs host open house for new skeet range

Recently, Tripp and Gregory County Shooting Sports Clubs hosted an open house for the new skeet range located north of Burke. The range was created to give local youth the experience of skeet shooting and to offer a facility to train for state and national competitions without having to travel great distances. The open house provided an excellent chance for locals to freshen up their skills.

Nation’s report card released: SD performing well compared to nation

Results of the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) were released earlier today. While some states experienced double-digit declines in average test scores, South Dakota scores stayed above the national average and experienced less volatility than other states.

Why are you so defensive?

The concept of psychological defenses dates back to Sigmund Freud. Interestingly, the use of the word “defenses” came about because Freud liked using military metaphors to help people make sense of what he was saying. What he saw in people was a tendency to avoid reexperiencing what they feared would be unbearable and overwhelming pain. In other words, they were engaging in some kind of defensive process to avoid feeling their painful emotions and to keep them out of awareness, as if those emotions were the enemy.

Cross country team was small but mighty at state

The Gregory High School boys cross country team finished in eighth place at the state B meet in Huron on Saturday, October 22. Sophomore Fin Adams was the team’s top runner, placing 19th with a time of 18:10.13. He was followed closely by Luke Sinclair, who ran his final cross country race as a Gregory Gorilla at the meet, finishing in 22nd place with a time of 18:14.66.

2022 State A Cheer & Dance performed well at state

The Gregory Gorillas cheer team started the season with 12 girls, dropped to 11 mid-season, and hitting the mat this year for State were 10 very talented young ladies. Stunting and the pyramid was our biggest challenge this year.
