BID’s first career fair, Wednesday, March 17, was a success according to Laura Peterson, who helped organize the event. She said it helped that the school personnel who accompanied the students encouraged them to visit all the tables and not just the ones they thought they might be interested in.

Suzanne Braun, Gregory/Dallas Chamber of Commerce Director, agreed that this proved to be true. Students stopping by her table were surprised by all the events the chamber has planned for the next several months. And a student from Burke learned that he can get an education in the plumbing trade through the National Guard. Kellie Tuttle commented that students were unaware of the variety of jobs at Karl’s TV as well as the number of locations they could explore.

Although Consumers Federal Credit Union doesn’t currently have any job openings, they enticed students to their table by giving out candy that students had to earn through a game and by completing a short quiz. They were surprised that many students did not know what an overdraft is.

Troy Sundquist of the Gray House Motel was actively seeking job applicants. He was hoping to generate some interest in a fulltime position during the adult time slot of the career fair.

Peterson was pleased with how the first career fair turned out, but said that she learned some things that she can do to improve it for next time. Hopefully this will open the students’ eyes to all the opportunities available and entice them to remain in or return to the community after graduation.
