Boes and Kepler represent Gregory in Battle of the Badges

Over the weekend Guhner Kepler and Brody Boes beat the weather to get to Box Elder and compete in South Dakota’s first “Battle of the Badges” on Saturday, January 13. “Battle of the Badges” (BOTB) is a nonprofit amateur boxing competition to raise money for local charities. Originally, a showdown between police and firefighters in Louisiana, BOTB has expanded across the country and includes veterans from the armed services and other first responders in addition to police and fire fighters. Occasionally the competitions are dodge ball and blood drives.

South Dakota State announces fall 2023 dean’s list

More than 3,400 students were recognized for their outstanding academic performance over the fall 2023 semester at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, by being named to the dean’s list. To earn dean’s list distinctions in SDSU’s colleges, students must have completed a minimum of 12 credits and must have earned at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Annual SD picnic

The 70th annual SD Picnic in Florida will be held February 24, 2024 at 12:00 noon at the Grace Lutheran Church fellowship hall in Lakeland, FL. All former South Dakotans, either permanent or seasonal residents, are invited to attend with their family.

Youth bowlers compete at state tournament in Huron

A group of Gregory youth bowlers attended the State Youth Tournament on April 5 and 6, 2023, at Huron, SD. Following are the results: Bear McSweeney placed 3rd in the boys All Events HDCP 99 Average & Under.

Gregory Co. Commissioners get affairs in order for 2024

The regular meeting of the Gregory County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, January 3, began with the election of chair and vice chair. Jessy Biggins and Byrain Boes will retain those titles.

Dave Engelmeyer fulfills a life-long dream

This is the case for Dave Engelmeyer, who not only fulfilled his dream of working on a float for the Rose Parade but also got to be part of the team that won the Showmanship Award for the most outstanding display of showmanship and entertainment.

Winter has arrived

As another winter storm moved across the country earlier this week, cancellations and postponements were the order of the day on Monday. Part of a winter storm warning, Gregory County was on the far western edge of the storm with most of the snowfall occurring to the east. Still, the 4.5 inches that fell, coupled with the threat of strong winds, were enough to cause a slow-down, especially since the snow was preceded by a freezing fog that created slippery conditions.

City council’s short agenda allows time for some updates

The Gregory City Council had a short agenda to tackle as they met at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at City Hall. Library off to a good start for 2024 The library continues to gain patrons, adding six in December, according to Library Director Tara Engel.

USD announces fall dean’s list

Approximately 2,390 students at the University of South Dakota were honored for their achievements during the fall 2023 semester with the release of the dean’s list. Full-time, undergraduate students are named to the dean’s list if they received a 3.5 GPA for courses they took in the fall 2023 semester, and they had no incomplete or failing grades.
