Huge surge in ‘unclaimed property’ is sole revenue bright spot for SD legislators

Record $308 million amount provides lawmakers with spending choices in an otherwise tight budget Amid the widespread budget cuts that Republican Gov. Kristi Noem proposed during her recent budget address, there was one source of surging revenue that will provide legislators with spending decisions this winter: unclaimed property.

SDSU Extension Pesticide Applicator (PAT) Training to be held Jan. 22

Private applicator certification is required before an agricultural producer can purchase or use a restricted use pesticide. A producer who has the potential to produce more than $1,000 of an agricultural commodity must be certified to use any pesticide. There is no fee for a private applicator certification, which is valid for three years and expires on the last day of February.

As Noem’s school choice bill divides educators, some districts cooperate with homeschool families

Nearly 15% of school-age children in the Meade School District — 504 students — are enrolled in alternative instruction instead of attending a state-accredited private or public school. 

Because state funding is partially based on enrollment, those children would bring roughly $3.5 million in funding to the district if they attended a public school.

Former DOC employee sentenced for prison related crimes

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announces that a former Department of Corrections employee has been sentenced after earlier pleading guilty to crimes involving a prison inmate. Madyson Bixby of Sioux Falls, 22, was sentenced January 7 in Minnehaha County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to one felony count of Compounding a Felony and one felony count of Possession of an Unauthorized Article (a cellphone with intent to deliver to an inmate).
