Statement on introduction of the “Family Grocery and Farmer Relief Act”

On March 5, 2026, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced the “Family Grocery and Farmer Relief Act” that aims to deconsolidate the U.S. beef-packing industry, address foreign ownership of beef-packing facilities, and focus on eliminating unfair and unjustly discriminatory pricing practices in retail and wholesale meat markets.

In Part I, we talked about how the concentration in the marketplace exploded from 1980 to 2021, and how that explosion in concentration resulted in a complete reversal of the allocation of the consumers’ beef dollar to each participant in the beef supply chain.

GFP end the Nest Predator Bounty Program while creating two new programs

The GFP Commission passed a resolution to end the current Nest Predator Bounty Program at their March meeting in Pierre and create two separate programs within the existing budget and time period. The Nest Predator Bounty Program began in 2019 with the implementation of the Second Century Initiative.

New law is a win for landowners

In a win for local conservation, HB 1001 was signed into law by Governor Larry Rhoden on Monday, March 9, 2026. The law allows adjoining landowners to burn stateowned (Title VI) ground along the Missouri River, in conjunction with landowners’ private ground, if the landowner has written permission from the associated state agency, reasonable forces available to suppress the spread of fire, and assumes all liability.
