Gregory becomes second So. Dak. county to approve hand counting ballots

Steve McCance and other interested county residents showed up for the public input portion of the regular meeting of the Gregory County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, March 6, to inquire about whether the board had made a decision regarding hand counting ballots at upcoming elections. Board Chair Jessy Biggins said that they had discussed it and were inclined to let their constituents make the decision by voting on it in the primary election.

SDSU announces summer, fall 2023 graduation list

The following students graduated after the summer and fall 2023 semesters at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. Nearly 1,000 students completed all requirements for a degree and/or certificate program.

Avery Zeisler named proficiency finalist

Gregory County FFA Member Avery Zeisler was announced as a finalist for the Ag Communications proficiency award this past week. This is the second time a Gregory County FFA member has been selected as a proficiency finalist.

A healthy plate

Many people might remember the food pyramid. It was created by the USDA in 1992 to give a visual explanation of what was considered at the time to be a healthy diet. This common image that is likely remembered frequenting the back of a cereal box was the model of food consumption for a short 19 years. It was replaced in 2005 by a staircase- looking model, then replaced again in 2011 by USDA’s MyPlate, which you might recognize as a plate divided into sections for fruits, veggies, proteins and grains with a side circle of healthy fats.

Student from Mongolia finds lots to like in South Dakota

Mungun Munkhbat is a foreign exchange student at Gregory High School this year, living with host family Virginia Dargatz and Clay Peck. Mungun is from Mongolia, a country located between Russia to the north and China to the south.

Girls wrestling expands in Gregory County

Daytona Paris and Libby Krcil were groundbreakers in Gregory County this winter, becoming the first two girls to compete in high school girls wrestling as part of the Burke/Gregory Storm team. Although women’s wrestling made its Olympic debut in 2004, girls wrestling at the high school and college levels is just now gathering steam.

Sometimes leap year isn’t a leap year

This year is a leap year, meaning that February had 29 days instead of the normal 28, which we observed on Thursday. It happens every four years, so it should come as no surprise to anyone when it rolls around. But why do we do this?

City gets state feedback on infrastructure project

SPN, the city’s engineering company for the infrastructure project, has finally received comments from the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources regarding Phase I. They have revised the plans and specifications per DANR’s request and resubmitted them. They expect approval any day, Mayor Al Cerny reported at the regular meeting of the Gregory City Council on Monday evening, March 4. Originally, SPN had expected to be able to go to bid in December 2023.
