Kegs & Corks draws a full house

The charcuterie table was just one of the many attractions at this year’s Kegs & Corks evening. Fresh squeezed lemonade, several beers, a large selection of wines, and numerous items for the live and silent auctions were on the ticket to raise funds for new Christmas decorations for the city. Byrain Boes was the winner of the special Chase the Ace drawing that evening.
A fire broke out

A fire broke out at the home of Craig and Mary Soesbe at the corner of 9th and Main Street in Gregory on Monday evening. On Tuesday morning, the Gregory Fire Department again responded to another fire at the same residence, in the attic. The cause of the fire was not known at the time this issue of the Advocate went to press.
Cracker barrel was held in Burke

District legislators held a cracker barrel over the weekend and traveled to Wagner, Platte, Burke, and Winner on Saturday, February 5th, to meet with constituents and update them on how the session is going. Erin Tobin, Caleb Finck, Rocky Blare, and Marty Overweg were in attendance. Due to the redistricting this year, Caleb Finck will move out of District 21 and Marty Overweg from New Holland will run in District 21.
After struggling with sickness and other issues, Storm finishes third at Redfield

The Burke/Gregory Storm wrestlers had a full week of competition with a dual on Tuesday with Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon, another dual on Thursday, a makeup with Chamberlain, and the Redfield Invitational on Saturday.
County explores possibility of juvenile housing, detention, and rehabilitation

The regular meeting of the Gregory County Board of Commissioners was held at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the Gregory County Courthouse. The minutes of the January 18, 2022, meeting were corrected as follows: “regarding holidays, the words “granted as paid leave” should say “granted as time off,” the highway department employee mention is David Jaros rather than Doug Jaros, and the Dixon Bridge number should be #27-030-081.
What does a groundhog have to do with the weather?

Groundhog Day, the celebrated day when a groundhog purportedly emerges from his winter slumbers to investigate whether or not he has a shadow in order to predict the onset of spring, was last week. It’s a strange tradition, looking to a furry burrowing mammal to forecast the weather, but the roots of this observance go back a very long way.
