South Dakota State University Extension will return to Dakotafest in 2024 with educational displays and on-site experts showcasing more than 10 topics. Dakotafest is from 9 a.m.

The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association appreciates and commends USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) for their proposal to amend regulations under the 1921 Packers and Stockyards Act. Introduced as the Fair and Competitive Livestock and Poultry Market Rules, the proposal instills new clarity for the unfair practices that the Packers and Stockyard Act prohibits. The proposed rules would define unfair practices as conduct which harms market participants as well as conduct that harms participant’s markets.

Drug Enforcement Administration recommends including conversations on dangers of drugs in back-to-school routines Students across South Dakota are returning to school this month and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Omaha Division is reminding families to make time for conversations about the unintended consequences of drug experimentation before kids head out the door for a new year of learning. Fentanyl and methamphetamine remain the top two drugs seized by the DEA in South Dakota.

Families who may qualify for free or reduced-price meals in school year 2024-25 can submit a free and reduced-price meal application. Schools will take applications and use family income to qualify students for the program.

This July, Buche Foods, in conjunction with Anna Halverson, Pass Creek Tribal Council Representative of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, undertook the challenge of a “Summer Food Program” feeding 28,000 children across the nine districts of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
