Barreto receives recognition for academic excellence

The Class of 2024’s best and brightest students were recognized on April 29, 2024, at the 34th Annual Academic Excellence Recognition luncheon. Governor Kristi Noem’s office, Lieutenant Governor Larry Rhoden and the Associated School Boards of South Dakota honored students who were identified as the top one percent of their senior class from the state’s Public, Private and tribal/BIE schools.

Julie Bartling, Gregory County Auditor, would like to remind county residents that Monday, May 20, 2024, is the deadline to register to vote for the June 4th Primary election. Auditor Bartling also encourages residents who have changed residences within the county or have perhaps had a name change, i.e. marriage, to also change their voter registration record for accuracy in voter residency.

The Kate Swinney was the first steamboat to be wrecked in the Missouri River within the borders of South Dakota. The accident occurred August 1, 1855, at what has since become known as “Kate Sweeney Bend,” between Vermillion and Elkpoint. The boat was returning to St. Louis from Fort Pierre.
