A private family service for Carol Haffield will be held at a later date. A gathering was held for friends and family at the Elks Lodge in Winner, SD on Sunday, December 17, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Mason Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Carol was born in Inglewood, CA, on February 7, 1944, to Joseph and Erliene (Hendrix) Cerny. The family returned home to Burke, SD, from CA when Carol was a young child. Carol graduated from Burke High School in 1962. She worked at the Burke Hospital after high school. In 1963, Carol married Robert Dykeman. To this union, one daughter, Leslie Jo was born. The family lived in Huron, SD, until Carol returned to her home town of Burke, SD, in 1978, then later moved to Winner, SD. She married Barry Sinkular, and they later divorced. In 1993, she married Vern Haffield. They resided in Winner, SD, during their thirty years of marriage.

Carol was a member of the Elks Lodge in Winner. She enjoyed playing various dice games Ship, Captain, and Crew, was her favorite. The grandkids and great-grandkids played many dice games with grandma Carol. She also enjoyed listening to country music, thrift shopping, playing cards, and visiting with friends. Christmas was her favorite holiday, making sure all the family’s traditional foods were served and traditions upheld. She enjoyed telling the history behind antique items, which she used growing up. Her cat Milo, was a great companion.

Carol Jane Haffield of Winner, SD, passed away on December 10, 2023.

Carol is survived by her husband Vern Haffield, Winner, SD; daughter Leslie Smith (significant other Tom), Shakopee, MN; five grandchildren: Benjamin Smith, Yankton, SD, Nicholas Smith, Pierre, SD, Nathan Smith, Burke, SD, Emily Vitek (Derek), Yankton, SD, Elly Daisy (Jerrod), Yankton, SD; and six great-grandchildren; sister Joan Kaney (Jack), Yankton, SD; stepchildren: Jerry Haffield and family, Sioux Falls, SD, and Julie Rohde and family of Colome, SD; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Joseph and Erliene (Mutt) Cerny.
