Funeral services for Frances Gould are scheduled for Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burke, SD, with Father Jonathan Dillon officiating. Liz Cihak was lector, Theresa Waterbury and Amber Wilhelmsen presented the gifts, and Weston and Wrenn Wilhelmsen were servers.

Music was provided by the Sacred Heart choir, accompanied by Jan Determan, organist, and Lynn McCabe-Hartner was in charge of registration. Casket bearers were Alissa Salmen, Ryan Wilson, Amber Wilhelmsen, Kyle Wilhelmsen, Quincy Salmen, Philip Kahler, Brian Kahler, Lucy Leines, and Tracy Leines. Honorary casket bearers were the Burke Class of 1960, all her former co-workers, those who have helped care for her, and all her great-grandchildren.

Interment was in the Herrick Cemetery in Herrick, SD. Clausen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Frances Loree (Hotz) Gould was born on January 13, 1942, in Burke, SD to William Crist Hotz and Mary Theresa (Pusl) Hotz. She was the sixth of eight children.

Fran was raised in the Herrick and Burke area. She attended grade school in the Herrick School and high school in Burke, graduating in the Class of 1960. After graduation she went to help her sisters and their families in northern Minnesota and North Dakota, returning to Herrick in 1961. Fran worked various jobs in her lifetime, from waitressing to 1st Deputy Auditor to a cook for 30 years in the Gregory Hospital. Fran’s most rewarding job was as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was everything to her as well as her faith in God. She proved her strength and courage to her family many times in her life. Fran enjoyed singing and was a soprano soloist in high school and sang on KBRX radio for a program for school. She sang at many weddings, funerals, in church, at the nursing home, and to her family all the time. She made many special memories with her nieces and nephews over the years. Fran had a special bond with her aides that came and assisted her at the apartment.

Frances was married twice in her lifetime. On September 28, 1963, she was united in marriage to Henry “Mick” Salmen at St. Johns Catholic Church in Herrick, SD. To this union two children were born Scott Mitchell and Teresa Marie. On April 26, 1974, she was united in marriage to Marvin Gould at the courthouse in Elk Pointe, SD. They were expecting in 1975, but sadly lost the twins 3 months into the pregnancy. Fran and Marvin remained strong together for 49 years of marriage.

Frances passed away on November 5, 2023 at the age of 81 years. Fran was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings: Robert, Clara (Jerry) Simunek, Marion (Joseph) Kacer, Loretta (Wesley) McKay, Joyce, David, and William; their twin babies; her former son-in-law Stuart Kahler; nephew Marc Farabee; nieces Sharon Barney and Debbie McKay.

Frances is survived by her husband Marvin; children, Scott (Rose) Salmen, Teresa (Stan) Waterbury; grandchildren: Alissa (Ryan), Amber (Kyle), Quincy (Amy), Philip (Kendra), Brian (Jordyne), Lucy (Tracy), Walter; 11 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Rose Hotz; brother-in-law Roy Farabee; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
