A funeral service for Jay Rollan Bartling was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2025, at Grace Lutheran Church in Burke, SD, with Pastor Philip Henning officiating. Music was provided by the Grace Lutheran Church Choir with Randy Sachtjen as accompanist. Tracy Buthe was in charge of registration, and flower attendants were Sharon Neuharth and Cathy Bartling. Brent Bartling, Ed Bartling, Rich Bartling, Blaine Bartling, Richard Hyronimus, and Brian Hardy were casket bearers. Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Burke, SD. Clausen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jay Rollan Bartling was born May 9, 1952, at Burke, SD, to Gerhardt and Joan (Inglett) Bartling of Lucas, SD.

Jay attended Hall Elementary School in Lucas until the family moved to Herrick, at which time he finished his elementary education at Butte Valley School. He attended Burke High School where he participated in football, basketball, track,and FFA. He graduated from Burke in 1970 and attended South Dakota State University on an ROTC and football scholarship. He graduated from college in 1974 with a degree in both biology and agriculture.

Jay then pursued a military career and was stationed in Germany. There he met Dominique Goday and they were united in marriage. To this union they were blessed with two children, Odessa Lynn and Anthony Mickael. After his tour in Germany, Jay continued in the army, stationed in West Virginia, Indiana, and Colorado. He was promoted to Major and eventually retired from the army.

After retirement, Jay got certified in secondary education and began teaching science and coaching sports. He influenced many scholars and athletes at Burke, Springview, Lake Andes, and Martin schools. After he retired from teaching, he and his daughter Honey lived on his acreage near Burke, SD, where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and tinkering on his many projects.

Jay died March 6, 2025, at the Winner Nursing Home in Winner, SD. He was 72 years old.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gerhardt and Joan Bartling and his infant brother Morris Dean.

He is survived by his children: Anthony (Melissa Jones Bartling) of Novato, CA, Odessa Goday of Portland, OR, Honey Bartling of Herrick, SD, and Dawson Bartling of Gregory, SD; a friend, Candace Luby; his siblings Mike and Jan (Bartling) Simunek of Hot Springs, SD, Sherri Raschke and friend Dale York of Herrick, SD, Bart and Julie (Drey) Bartling of Gregory, SD, Doug and Laurie (Bartling) Wernke of Lennox, SD, Matt Bartling of Herrick, SD, and Dean and Krista (Bartling) Holliday of Orchard, NE; his grandchildren Sadie and Brynnlee Bartling of Novato, CA, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.
