Funeral services were held for Lorraine Steppat on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Winner, SD.

Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery in Burke, SD. Mason Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Lorraine Irene Steppat was born on May 22, 1931 at home in Paxton, SD to Leonard M. Vander Kuur and Christina (Braun) Vander Kuur. She was the oldest of three children. Lorraine was baptized on November 4, 1931 and attended country school near Paxton. In May of 1947 they moved to Burke where she worked at the Gambles Store for five years.

She was confirmed at the Grace Lutheran Church in Burke, SD, on April 3, 1953. On April 5, 1953 she married Fred Steppat of Mills, NE. To this union three daughters were born; Joy, Dawn and Amy.

Lorraine and Fred worked for Allan Kime for 1 1/2 years when they moved to Burke to help her father with his filling station after he broke his arm.

They moved to Fred Gnirk’s and worked for them, and then Bud Kallander’s, west of Burke, while she and Fred worked at Kallander’s Market.

In May of 1960 they moved to Winner where they lived until the time of her death.

Lorraine did a lot of babysitting and caring for the elderly. She also loved to crochet, craft and spending time with her family.

Lorraine was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where she taught Bible School and was a member of the Ladies Aid. Lorraine also helped get the Girl Pioneers started and was on the Pioneer council and a leader for many years.

Lorraine Steppat, 92, of Winner, SD passed away on Monday, February 26, 2024 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Facility in Winner, SD.

She is survived by her three daughters, Joy (Jerry) Tyburec of Winner, SD, Dawn (Rod) Drey of Winner, SD, Amy Meinen, of Gregory, SD; six grandchildren: Jesse Tyburec (fiancé Jody Mitchel), Jerrel Tyburec, Sierra (Jordan) Christensen, Seth (Carrie) Drey, Shayden (Shania) Drey and Caylee Meinen; nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Don Steppat; sisters-in-law Lee Schamber, Donna Steppat, and Gladys Steppat; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lorraine is preceded in death by her husband Fred of 60 years; her parents; grandparents; brother Norman Vander Kuur; sister Dorothy Steffen; brothers-in-law Vic Steffen, Ronnie Steppat, and Bill Schamber; mother and father in law; nieces; nephews; aunts; and uncles.
