Mark was born on August 21, 1955 in Gregory, SD, to Harris and Dolores (Nelson) Johnson. He received his education at South Dakota School for the Deaf and graduated in 1974. He went to Gallaudet College in Washington, DC. He worked at Communication Service for the Deaf as a sign language instructor, historian, and many other roles. He also worked at Augustana College in the ASL Lab. He was an ASL Instructor at Southeast Technical Institute where many of his students worked under him and became his longtime friends. He worked as a mentor for the students who studied to become ASL interpreters Mark enjoyed quilting, embroidery, crocheting afghans and toys.

He enjoyed his volunteer work and did doing research on the Deaf Community, and was involved in many different deaf activities. He was known as Deaf Activist for Deaf Community. He gave all of his knowledge, expertise and skills.

Mark Bruce Johnson, age 68, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at his residence.

Upon his request, there was no funeral service. He is survived by LaDonna Haake of Sioux Falls, SD; Terry Johnson (Nancy) of Colorado; four nieces and nephews; and many relatives and friends.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents Harris and Dolores Johnson; grandparents; and brother Dennis Johnson.

Kober Funeral Home of Vermillion, SD was in charge of arrangements.
