Stephen Emanuel Schrader was born on October 22, 1954, to Emanuel and Beulah (Bennett) Schrader in Burke, SD, the 16th of the 17 Schrader children. Steve spent all 70 years of his life on the home place that his parents purchased in 1932.
Steve grew up doing many chores on the farm, from feeding bucket calves and the pigs, doing chicken chores, and graduating to milking the cows by hand as the years went by. Steve, his siblings, and other relatives spent many days riding the Shetland ponies to check on the cows and enjoying the summer days. Steve started helping in the hay field by riding on the dump rake behind one of the older siblings driving the tractor, eventually moving up to mowing and raking alongside his dad and the other siblings.
Steve attended Spotted Tail Country School through the 8th grade and kept working on the family farm after his schooling ended. He was an avid sports fan from an early age, listening to games on the radio or watching them on TV. He watched all kinds of sports, but he especially loved watching his Yankees play baseball. He also loved the Nebraska Cornhuskers and watched many of their football and volleyball games over the years. Steve extended his love of sport into his personal life playing slow pitch softball with the Burke Moonlighters and the Carlock Bandits for many years.
Steve attended family gatherings and visited his siblings and relatives whenever he could.
