Gorillas hold 12-3 record

The Gregory Gorillas hosted KWL on Saturday, January 27, 2024, in a makeup game from earlier in the season. The Gorillas defeated the WiLdKats by a score of 50-27. The Gorillas held a 14-5 first quarter lead and a 34-13 lead at halftime behind a balanced attack. Both teams had trouble getting on track in the third quarter as the Gorillas managed just six points and the WiLdKats scored just four points in the quarter. The two teams’ scoring troubles continued into the fourth quarter before the Gorillas came away with the victory. Three players scored in double figures with Daniel Mitchell and Noah Bearshield leading the way with 14 points each. Cruz Klundt added 10 points. With the win, the Gorillas improved to 10-2 on the year.

Girls drop three in week’s play

Gregory 27 vs. Mount Vernon Plankinton 67 Gregory hosted Mount-Vernon Plankinton on Tuesday, January 30. MVP came out on fire in the first quarter making 5 3-pointers and taking a 22-28 first quarter lead. MVP lead 36-12 at half and 55-23 at the end of the third, and a final of 67-27. MVP tallied 11 threes in the ballgame. Gregory was led by Asia VanDerWerff with 12, Dani VanDerWerff 9, and 2 each for Ella Sperl, Regan Graesser, and Sadie Carlson. Emilee Fox led MVP with 24. Gregory shot a very cool 16% from the field to MVP’s 35%. The Gorillas were 3 of 36 from the 3-point line. Rebounding shows Gregory with 29, to MVP’s 44. Rebounding for Gregory were Dani VanDerWerff 7, Ashlyn Vosika 3, Ella Sperl 5, Allison Stevicks 2, Regan Graesser 4, Asia VanDer-Werff 8. Regan Graesser had 4 steals, and Dani VanDerWerff 2, to lead Gregory.

Storm finishes 6th, Paris claims championship in weekend tourney

Coach Webster is more appreciative than ever of his bus driver Mark Joachim after two trips through the dense murkiness in one week. First, the team traveled to Bon Homme on Tuesday, January 30 for a triangular. The open weights worked against them as they lost to Bon Homme/Scotland/ Avon 61-15 and then to Plankinton/ Corsica-Stickney 42-33. The girls each had a match that evening as well, against Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon. Daytona Paris pinned her opponent, and Libby Krcil lost her match.

Boys and girls wrestlers compete in Ainsworth over the weekend

The Storm wrestlers traveled out of state over the weekend to compete in the Ainsworth Invitational Tournament. The boys team wrestled on Saturday, and finished in fourth place with 128 points, well ahead of Twin Loup in fifth with 82 points, and behind Central City, Valentine, and Loomis. The girls team wrestled on Friday and finished ninth with 12 points.

Twenty schools participating in e-sports pilot season

A pilot season for e-sports in South Dakota is helping high schools work out the technical kinks as well as building a foundation of mentors for the future. At its meeting Wednesday, the South Dakota High School Activities board of directors heard an update on the pilot season from Kaleb Dschaak, CEO of Fenworks.

Gregory girls pick up victory over Stanley Co.

The Gorillas picked up a victory over Stanley County on January 23, at home. Quarter scores show Gregory with 16, 32, 41, and 51, while Stanley County had 7, 21, 27, and 41. The Gorillas shot 14 of 62 from the field for 23% and Stanley County was 15 of 60 for 25%. The Gorillas were a cool 5 of 16 from the foul line for 31%.

Boys extend record to 9-2 in last week’s play

Gregory 72 Avon 49 The Goriilas boys basketball team hosted Avon on Thursday to kick off a run of five games in six days. The Pirates held a 16-15 lead after one quarter before the Gorilla defense settled in.

SDHSAA board hears membership number appeals from six schools

The South Dakota High School Activities Association board of directors is working toward figuring out the classifications and alignments for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. At its meeting Wednesday, six schools appealed their membership numbers. Membership numbers determine a school’s classification for sports and activities.
