Storm boys place third in Ainsworth tournament

The Burke/Gregory Storm boys placed third at Ainsworth on Saturday, January 31, 2026, just 13.5 points shy of second. For the second week in a row, Mason Janak won the award for fastest pin, both times at 17 seconds.

Gorillas battle in overtime

The Gregory Gorillas picked up a win in overtime on Thursday, January 29, 2026, when they defeated the Avon Pirates 60-56 on the home floor. The Gorillas shot the ball at a blistering pace to start the game, connecting on 6 three point baskets in the opening quarter.The hot shooting tapered off a bit in the second quarter but the Gorillas still held a seven point lead, 27-20 at halftime.The Pirates slowly heated up in the second half and gained a seven point lead midway through the fourth quarter. Landon Keiser did his best to pick up the scoring for the Gorillas as he tallied 8 points in the fourth quarter.With the Gorillas trailing by three points with under a minute left in the game, Jacob Klein tied the game with a three pointer of his own and the game went to overtime.In overtime, Lincoln Juracek and Colt Keiser did their best to outscore the Pirates, scoring all nine points in the overtime period and the Gorillas escaped with the four point victory. The Gorillas were led by Lincoln Juracek’s 20 points and 4 assists. Colt Keiser chipped in with 17 points and 7 rebounds while Jacob Klein added 12 points and Landon Keiser netted 8 points. “We got bit by the injury bug last week so we went into the game with a short bench.Our kids showed a lot of toughness as our depth was very depleted going into the game.” The Gorillas are now 5-5 on the year.

Small but mighty: Gregory youth wrestlers dominate the auditorium

Gregory youth wrestling tournament took place Friday, January 23, 2026. Although we had frigid temperatures outside, the Gregory Auditorium saw chaos inside with kids wrestling to get atop of the podium. Gregory had 43 of our very own wrestlers showcasing their skills to the crowd. Even though we had many scratch because of weather and sickness, we still were able to get some great brackets and witness some great wrestling. With the help of the volunteers and parents, we were able to effectively get done with wrestling in 2 hrs. It was a successful night for the Gregory youth wrestling program.

Storm boys improve from last year’s performance at Winner tournament

The Burke/Gregory Storm boys wrestling team competed at the Winner Invitational on Saturday, January 24, 2026, more than doubling the number of place finishers from last year. “Three kids placed at Winner last year; this year we had seven,” Coach Seth Webster said.

Burke/Gregory Storm girls compete in Pierre

All four girls who competed in the Governor Girls Wrestling Invitational in Pierre on Friday, January 23, 2025, earned team points to finish the day with a 13th place team finish. Daytona Paris led the team with 12.5 team points, finishing in 4th place.

At 4-5 on the season, boys basketball team has a busy upcoming schedule

The Gregory Gorillas and the Miller Rustlers met in a renewed SESD conference matchup on Saturday, January 24, 2026, which saw the Rustlers defeat the Gorillas 51-42. The Gorillas took an early 5-0 lead but they could not hang on as they trailed 11-15 after one quarter of play.The Rustlers dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Gorillas 14-4 and the Gorillas trailed 15-29 at the half. “We just struggled offensively in the second quarter. We had opportunities but didn’t take advantage.”

SD students to compete in state spelling bee

Carson Walker, SD News Watch Elementary and middle school students from around South Dakota will compete Saturday, Feb. 7, in the state spelling bee at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell.

Four Storm girls place at Battler Girls tourney

The Burke/Gregory Storm girls traveled to Gettysburg on Friday, January 16, 2026, for the Battler Girls Wrestling Tournament. In a field of 18 teams, the Storm girls placed 8th with 49.5 points.
